Description island Achill

The inhabited fairly large island of Achill is located in the country of Ireland, Western Europe. The distance to the mainland is, quite close about 0.2 km. The surface-area of the island is 148.1 km2 and is therefore 0.39 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Atlantic Ocean and the total coastal length is about 129.3 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 23 km by 17.5 km (maximum width). The island is West-northwest - East-southeast oriented. The highest point is 688 meter and is named Croaghaun (kliffen). The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 53.97 (53°58'0.0372), -10.04 (-10°2'1.6818).


The population is 2700 and the population density is thus on 18.2 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²). The capital of the island is Gob an Choire - Achill Sound (located in the East of the island). Other places on the island are: Dooagh, Keel, Dumha Éige, Dugort. The island is located in the Northwest of the country Ireland. It is located in the administrative unit Province Connacht (local administrative level-name province), in the County Mayo (local administrative level-name County).
The island is accessible by car (by means of ferry or bridge). The distance from Western-Europe (The Netherlands) is about 1338 km. Far as is known, there are good cycling opportunities on the island.
