Description island Cyprus

The inhabited very large island of Cyprus (local name Kýpros) is located in the country of Cyprus, Southern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 68.4 km. The nearest (main) land is Turkey and is not the country to which the island belongs. The surface-area of the island is 9222.9 km2 and is therefore 24.3 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Mediterranean Sea and the total coastal length is about 905 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 240 km by 100 km (maximum width). The island is Southwest - Northeast oriented. The highest point is 1952 meter and is named Mount Olympus 1952 meter. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 35.06 (35°3'53.8524), 33.32 (33°18'55.9116).


The population is 796740 and the population density is thus on 74.9 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²). The capital of the island is Nicosia (located in the Center of the island). Other places on the island are: Limasol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta (OZO), Kyrenia. The island is located in the Northeast of the country Cyprus.
