Description island Île d'Oléron

The inhabited fairly large island of Île d'Oléron is located in the country of France, Western Europe. The distance to the mainland is, quite close about 1.1 km. The surface-area of the island is 175.7 km2 and is therefore 0.463 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Bay of Biscay and the total coastal length is about 82.6 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 30 km by 8 km (maximum width). The island is Northwest - Southeast oriented. The highest point is 34 meter and is named Les dunes de Saint-Trojan. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 45.93 (45°56'0.2958), -1.29 (-1°17'31.1244).


The population is 21242 and the population density is thus on 122 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²). It is located in the administrative unit Region Poitou-Charentes (local administrative level-name région), in the Departement Charente-Maritime (local administrative level-name Département).
