Description island Islay

The inhabited large island of Islay (local name Ìle) is part of (the island group) Inner Hebrides and is located in the country of Great Britain , Western Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 21.5 km. The surface-area of the island is 611 km2 and is therefore 1.6 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Atlantic Ocean and the total coastal length is about 225 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 41 km by 26 km (maximum width). The highest point is 491 meter and is named Beinn Bheigier. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 55.76 (55°45'5.0526), -6.22 (-6°13'17.0688).


The population is 3604 and the population density is thus on 5.9 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²). The island is located in the Northwest of the country Great Britain . It is located in the administrative unit Council area Argyll and Bute (local administrative level-name council area), in the Ward Kintyre and the Islands (local administrative level-name Ward). Direct neighboring islands of Islay are (distance from central part island to central part of the neighboring islands):

There is a ferry connection for cars to the mainland. For pedestrians, there is a ferry connection to the mainland also.
