Description island Rodos

The inhabited large island of Rodos (local name Ródos - Ρόδος ) is part of (the island group) South Aegean and is located in the country of Greece, Southern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 17.4 km. The nearest (main) land is Turkey and is not the country to which the island belongs. The surface-area of the island is 1401.9 km2 and is therefore 3.7 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Aegean Sea and the total coastal length is about 229.4 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 75 km by 38 km (maximum width). The island is Southwest - Northeast oriented. The highest point is 1215 meter and is named Attavyros 1215 meter. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 36.18 (36°11'0.465), 27.95 (27°57'11.5236).


The population is 117007 and the population density is thus on 83 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²). The capital of the island is Rodos (located in the Northeast of the island). Other places on the island are: Faliraki, Lindos, Ixia, Trianda . The island is located in the East-southeast of the country Greece. It is located in the administrative unit Region South Aegean (local administrative level-name Periféreia - περιοχή ), in the Regional unit Dodecanese (local administrative level-name Nomos - Πειραιάς).
