Description island Saaremaa

The inhabited very large island of Saaremaa (local name Samsala) is part of (the island group) West Estonian archipelago and is located in the country of Estland, Northern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 15.2 km. The nearest (main) land is Estonia and is not the country to which the island belongs. The surface-area of the island is 2659.6 km2 and is therefore 7 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Baltic Sea and the total coastal length is about 878.2 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 115 km by 60 km (maximum width). The island is Southwest - Northeast oriented. The highest point is 54 meter and is named Viidu Raunamägi. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 58.38 (58°22'54.3468), 22.53 (22°31'3.4914).


The population is 39231 and the population density is thus on 13.5 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²). The capital of the island is Kuressaare (located in the South of the island). Other places on the island are: Orissaare vald (NNO). The island is located in the West-southwest of the country Estland. It is located in the administrative unit Saare County (local administrative level-name Maakond), in the municipalities : 1) Kuressaare 2) Lääne-Saare 3) Kihelkonna 4) Laimjala 5) Leisi 6) Muhu 7) Mustjala 8) Orissaare 9) Pihtla 10) Pöide 11) Ruhnu 12) Salme 13) Torgu 14) Valjala (local administrative level-name Vald).
The island is accessible by car (by means of ferry or bridge). The distance from Western-Europe (The Netherlands) is about 1699 km. There is a ferry connection for cars to the mainland. For pedestrians, there is a ferry connection to the mainland also. There are ferry connections with car to other (neighboring) island (s). There are also (seasonal) ferry connections for pedestrians (-cyclists) with other (neighboring) island(s). Far as is known, there are good cycling opportunities on the island.
