Description island Sicily

The inhabited very large island of Sicily (local name Sicilia) is located in the country of Italy, Southern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 3.1 km. The surface-area of the island is 25437.6 km2 and is therefore 67 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Mediterranean Sea and the total coastal length is about 1346.1 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 210 km by 130 km (maximum width). The island is West-northwest - East-southeast oriented. The highest point is 3350 meter and is named Vulkaan Etna 3350 meter. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 37.59 (37°35'16.0152), 14.16 (14°9'18.3348).

The population is 5048741 and the population density is thus on 193.3 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²). The capital of the island is Palermo (located in the North-northwest of the island). Other places on the island are: Catania (O), Sircacusa (OZO), Trapani (W). The island is located in the South-southeast of the country Italy. It is located in the administrative unit Autonomous region Sicily (local administrative level-name regione), in the Province Caltanissetta (local administrative level-name Provincia ).
