Description island ChiosThe inhabited large island of Chios (local name Χίος ) is part of (the island group) North Aegean and is located in the country of Greece, Southern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 6.6 km. The nearest (main) land is Turkey and is not the country to which the island belongs. The surface-area of the island is 847.8 km2 and is therefore 2.2 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Aegean Sea and the total coastal length is about 197.7 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 50 km by 29 km (maximum width). The island is North - South oriented. The highest point is 1293 meter and is named Voiuitiko Pelineoy. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 38.4 (38°2'24.4248), 26.02 (26°1'1.2288).The population is 51936 and the population density is thus on 62.00 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²).
