The inhabited very large island of Corsica (local name Corse) is part of (the island group) Corsica and is located in the country of France, Western Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 82.7 km. The nearest (main) land is Italy and is not the country to which the island belongs. The surface-area of the island is 8723.3 km2 and is therefore 23 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Mediterranean Sea and the total coastal length is about 950 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 183 km by 80 km (maximum width). The island is North - South oriented. The highest point is 2706 meter and is named Monte Cinto. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 42.15 (42°9'6.0768), 9.11 (9°6'21.4632).
