Description island SaaremaaThe inhabited very large island of Saaremaa (local name Samsala) is part of (the island group) West Estonian archipelago and is located in the country of Estland, Northern Europe. The distance to the mainland is about 15.2 km. The nearest (main) land is Estonia and is not the country to which the island belongs. The surface-area of the island is 2659.6 km2 and is therefore 7 x times greater than the island of Isle of Wight. The island lies in the Baltic Sea and the total coastal length is about 878.2 km and the dimensions of the island are approximately 115 km by 60 km (maximum width). The island is Southwest - Northeast oriented. The highest point is 54 meter and is named Viidumägi. The coordinates (latitude, longitude) of the island (center) for GPS are 58.38 (58°22'54.3468), 22.53 (22°31'3.4914).The population is 31357 and the population density is thus on 11.70 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared Isle of Wight 364 inhabitants / km²).
